Job Description

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the BESS Engineering Specialist will be responsible for performing BESS technical assessments and layout optimisation for energy storage projects, as well as leading BESS performance assessments. The BESS Engineering Specialist also advises on the preliminary and basic design and configuration of energy storage projects under development, supports the tender process for BESS and ancillary equipment, and conducts technical analysis of the designs provided by others. This role is central in providing support to the BD, Engineering, and Asset Management teams during all phases of the projects’ life - development, construction, operation, and ultimately decommissioning. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the analysis of technical due diligence, feasibility studies, and design optimisation processes for energy storage projects, including performance assessments, auxiliary loss assessment, noise and visual impact assessment, EMI studies, use case impacts on average SoC and SoH, etc 
  • Coordinate the deployment and installation of on-site assessment equipment and services, including managing collection of data 
  • Lead the technical definition of BESS performance tests and conduct/review the tests 
  • Support and provide input to the Project Engineer for design for permitting, preliminary design, basic design, and detailed design 
  • Coordinate with the other Units within the Organisation to provide the technical input to support project business cases for new opportunities 
  • Supporting tender process for selection of BESS equipment, including collation and preparation of technical documentation 
  • Participate in design review meetings and conduct technical analysis of design modifications and non-conformities during construction and commissioning phases, especially those impacting BESS equipment performance 
  • Support performance calculations during project delivery phase and operation phase

Desired Skills and Experience

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, or Renewable Engineering or equivalent 
  • 3 to 5 years’ demonstrated experience in the renewables sector, preferably in Australia 
  • Knowledge of solar, wind and energy storage project development (BESS technologies, project siting, BESS project design, planning permits, etc.) 
  • Advanced knowledge of technical performance analysis methods and ability to quantify differences in ways that convey key concepts to non-technical audiences 
  • Advanced knowledge of the BESS technology and energy management control systems 
  • Previous experience in working closely with BESS equipment OEMs, energy storage project development, or other technoeconomic analysis focused roles will be considered extremely advantageous 
  • Previous experience business case evaluation, including financials will be considered extremely advantageous 
  • Basic knowledge of the Development Approval process 
  • Knowledge of relevant technology standards AS/NZS (IEC, IEEE, UL is a plus) 
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office package, including MS Project 
  • Proficient in the use of CAD software (particularly, AutoCAD) is an advantage 
  • Proficient in the use of various technical modelling software packages (eg HOMER)
